Молодой офицер Алексей решает разделиться со своим взводом, который перемещается по стране, чтобы доставить припасы для армии. Он попадает в засаду банды грабителей, и, хотя ему удается каким-то образом сбежать, бандиты выслеживают его с целью выкупа.
Пытаясь убежать, офицер натыкается на прячущегося в лесу дезертира. Отчаявшись о помощи, Алексей пытается убедить его, что он царевич, сын Петра Великого, и обещает простить дезертира.
Но оказывается, что беглецу нужно свести счеты, и он не ищет спасения.

A young officer Alexei decides to split up with his platoon moving across the country to deliver supplies for the army. He gets ambushed by a band of robbers and though he manages to escape somehow the bandits hunt him down for a ransom.

Trying to get away the officer stumbles upon a deserter who is hiding in the woods. Desperate for help Alexei tries to convince him that he is the csarevitch, son of Peter the Great, and promises to pardon the deserter.
But it turns out that the runaway has his own score to settle and is not looking for salvation.
